Education Work around the Production

A range of workshops and tailor-made events accompany the play, enabling groups to interact with the actors and explore the characters’ stories in greater depth. The range of workshop options includes:

Drama education workshops
A drama workshop can be a fun and safe way to explore the experiences of the characters in the play and examine how they deal with the past and create pathways for their futures. In a safe and supportive environment, participants engage with the characters, reflect on their journeys and explore the issues raised in the play.
Target groups: youth offending groups, ex-offender groups, women’s groups.

Training events for students on the work of the Company

  • A skills based workshop looks at the techniques the company uses in its work with women offenders, ex-offenders and women at risk of offending, and explores its application in other settings and with other vulnerable groups.
  • A form based workshop looks at the play text and the theatrical conventions used in the staging for drama students at GCSE, A Level and BTEC to gain insight into the company’s work.

Training events for students or professionals in work with offenders
Using interactive techniques, this training uses the themes of the play as a stimulus and provides a safe environment for students/workers to explore key issues in working with offenders, including rules, boundaries, power and empowerment. Participants will be able to use the experiences of the characters in the play to rehearse creative strategies and develop their skills and awareness of working with this client group.

Talks, presentations and post-show discussions
Staff give talks on the work Clean Break does, our ethos and the benefits to women in the criminal justice system. Post-show discussions are scheduled at most venues the Company visits with members of the cast, actor, director and Clean Break staff.

For all workshops Clean Break can provide education materials which contain information about the Company and the play, as well as suggested creative activities to develop further some of the ideas initiated in the workshops. For more details, contact Anna Herrmann, Head of Education.
