Commissioning Circle

“[My Clean Break commission] inspired and sustained me creatively in brilliant and unexpected ways… [I was] afforded rare and very special chances to push myself as a writer, in ways which aren’t possible elsewhere.”
Lucy Kirkwood, playwright

Clean Break’s Commissioning Circle is an exclusive community of supporters who share our passion for discovering and nurturing the next generation of exceptional women playwrights.

By joining our Commissioning Circle, you’ll directly invest in emerging writers and contribute to the creation of new plays that challenge, inspire, and make a real difference - while connecting with some of the UK’s most exciting playwrights and gaining behind-the-scenes access to our creative processes.

What Makes Clean Break’s Commissions Different

Every writer who joins Clean Break on commission spends a number of years becoming fully immersed in our work. Playwrights are central to our community, running workshops in our studios in Kentish Town and in prisons. This immersion process is what deepens their understanding of our work and unlocks the stories which form their commission.

What Supporters Receive

  • Insight into the creative process with access to early script readings, rehearsals, and behind-the-scenes events
  • Priority booking for new productions
  • Exclusive updates on the progression of artists, priority casting, production news and annual reports
  • Annual afternoon tea with the Artistic Director, Associate Artistic Director and other founding members to discuss the artistic vision

Take Your Seat

"Since coming to Clean Break, I will walk into any theatre in London and believe I have the right to be there"
Clean Break Member

Providing theatre trips for Clean Break Members

Take Your Seat is a unique opportunity to enable women with experience of the criminal justice system, or who are at risk, to visit the theatre.

All funds received via the scheme go directly towards organising theatre trips for our Members.

In the UK, there is a crisis of inequality in who has access to the arts. The generous support we receive through our Take Your Seat scheme helps to remove some of the barriers our Members face by:

  • Providing free theatre tickets
  • Covering transport and refreshment costs
  • Attending performances as a group, fostering a sense of community and alleviating isolation
  • Having staff on hand to support should any difficult themes arise in the plays

Beyond removing barriers to accessing theatre as audience members, Take Your Seat supports women’s development as artists in their own right. It does this by offering exclusive Q&A sessions with the cast and industry professionals, and providing team bonding and reflection activities, which supports participation in our core creative workshops.

Support Take Your Seat

There is no minimum donation to join Take Your Seat, all donations are gratefully received.

If you have any questions about joining, please contact Hannah Jackson, Development Manager, hannah.jackson@cleanbreak.org.uk
